Congratulations you just found the first piece of hidden treasure from our Mafia 2 trove. Be sure to make a note of this link and try to uncover the other six before sending us your answers. Happy hunting! ![]() EA and DICE combined to produce one of the best FPS of last year with Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Not only was the campaign impressive, the squad-oriented multiplayer was excellent. Aiming to build on their initial success, EA and DICE have teamed up yet again to create the eagerly awaited next installment of the Medal of Honor franchise. As you may or may not be aware, a beta version of the game has been around for a while now for PC and PS3. The Xbox 360 version of this has just been released, and after racking up a few hours of gameplay, here are my opinions of the beta: The beta consists of two game modes: Team Assault and Mission. Team Assault is the traditional team death-match style of gameplay and is played out in the streets of Kabul. The gameplay here is quite hectic, due to the majority of close-quarter sections on the map. Mission, however, is set out on a much larger map in Helmand Valley, and is similar to Rush mode from BF:BC2. There are 5 sets of objectives which must be captured by the attacking team by occupying them, while the defending team will try to hold them off. It's nothing revolutionary, but it works well, and proves to be a very enjoyable mode. ![]() The whole game runs at a much faster pace than that of Bad Company 2, and feels much more like a direct competitor to the CoD series. The battles in this game are set at a much higher pace than those of Battlefield, with team death matches even bordering chaotic at times. Whether this is a theme which will last throughout the games varying maps and modes remains to be seen. From what I have seen so far, the pace is close to, if not on par with MW2. By no means is this beta perfect however; there are many, many things wrong which will need to be addressed before release. Here are some of the major issues that I encountered: • Balance: It can feel at time that the odds are stacked against the Insurgent team, especially in Mission mode. The American weapons seem to be better overall, and compiled with the spawning system where any attacker can spawn on the frontline, and you will not find defending a very enjoyable experience. By sorting the spawning points, so that you don't spawn in the thick of it, would aid this balance issue • Graphical Glitches: There are a few glitches with the game's graphics. Firstly, weapon attachments can be a pure white colour after you die and re-spawn. This can happen quite often, and proves to be a bit of a distraction. The main graphical issue I have with the 360 beta however, is the fact that the screen resolution is incorrect. There seems to be a decent chunk of screen missing at both the top and bottom, which hides a lot of important information such as ammo levels. • Recoil: The weapons on this game seem to have extremely low levels of recoil when fired. This can make combat unrealistic, and allow for the use of a sniper rifle to be used at short range with no real recoil penalty • Explosive Damage: At present, explosives cause very little damage to surrounding areas, and only seem to kill with a direct hit. This is a pretty major issue and renders explosives as good as irrelevant, so I can't see this making it all the way through to the final build. • Death Freeze: By far the most annoying issue with the beta occurs when you die. As if being killed wasn't painful enough, you then have to contend with the game freezing for about a second before you drop. It doesn't sound like much, but believe me it is over the full length of a match. The main aspect of the game which is going to determine whether or not MoH is a success is the core gameplay, and in my opinion, it's great. The gunfights feel fluid and exciting, and the game as a whole is good to play. Sure, there are some rather big glitches and bugs with the game which you need to look past to enjoy it in its current state, but I can't imagine that any of these will make it through to the final cut of the game. You have to remember that this game is only a beta. DICE & EA have plenty of time to iron out the creases, and if they do, this title could well live up to the reputation of the Medal of Honor we all know from yesteryear. Further Screenshots:
